Security in the Post-PC era: smartphones and tablets require more security
August 14, 2011

The smartphone, and increasingly the tablet, are fast becoming the primary device of choice for both personal and enterprise use. Infosecurity spoke with Omri Sigelman, VP of marketing and products for AVG Mobile Solutions, at last week’s Black Hat conference in Las Vegas to discuss the state of security in the rapidly changing ‘post-PC era’. One of the things that complicate the mobile security landscape is the handful of major operating systems that make it up – each requiring a separate approach to personal and enterprise security, Sigelman noted. Regardless of operating system, however, the most vulnerable aspect of these devices are the software they run, with each operating system bringing to the table both positives and negatives. “All of IT, not only mobile, is going toward the crowd and open source”, he said referring to the Apple vs. Google battle currently taking place in the mobile marketplace. “It has taken a strong turn into mobile...and now we have a war of different approaches – centralized versus open.” Sigelman was not afraid to predict that the war would likely be won by open-source operating systems, but admits there are problems with open-source mobile app code. “It’s open source, so the code can be much better because a lot of people can work on it and improve it. The good guys can see it”, but he was quick to add that, “but the bad guys can see it as well”.

Google faces new round of Android malware
June 02, 2011

For the second time in three months, Google yanked dozens of malware-infected smartphone apps from the Android Market. The 34 apps were pulled over the weekend and Tuesday by Google after security researchers notified the company. Google acknowledged giving some Android apps the heave-ho. "We've suspended a number of suspicious applications from Android Market and are continuing to investigate them," a Google spokeswoman said in an email reply to questions late Tuesday. As in the March episode, when Google removed more than 50 apps, the newest round consisted of pirated legitimate programs that had been modified with malicious code and then re-released to the Android Market under false names.

Android smartphones face data breach threat
May 19, 2011

A trio of researchers at Ulm University in Germany found that it was “quite easy” for hackers to intercept data from Google’s photo-sharing, calendar and contacts applications, as well as potentially other Google services such as Gmail, using a flaw that affects 99 per cent of all Android devices. The revelation will again put the spotlight on Google’s approach to security with its mobile operating system, which is the most popular software for smartphones in the world. The security flaw has been fixed in Android’s 2.3.4 version of its operating softwares and beyond.

400 Percent Increase In Android Malware; Mobile Security Threats At Record High
May 16, 2011

One of the most unsettling findings of the study was the fact that the greatest distribution point for mobile malware is the application download. With the 400-percent increase of Android malware, now would be as good a time as any to choose an antivirus app. Still, the vast majority of mobile users neglect to employ any form of antivirus software on their mobile devices. And Android isn’t the only medium under attack, either. According to a different study from AVG Technologies, Facebook (along with Android) has seen a huge jump in malicious campaigns, specifically three times that of last year. The study also revealed the risks of SMS, which is particularly upsetting, as it is the most used activity on a cell phone for about a million years running, and may just be the preferred form of communication in the next few years. To that end, it is certainly worth noting that 17 percent of all reported infections came from SMS trojans, which sent texts to premium rate numbers, incurring major charges to the victims. The study also mentioned that 20 percent of all teens admit to sending explicit or inappropriate material from a mobile device.

Will Android dominance increase IT security threats for business?
May 16, 2011

There has been a 400% increase in Android malware since mid-2010, according to the first malicious mobile threats report by Juniper Networks. The fact that Android will soon become the biggest mobile content platform will only accelerate that trend, Siegelmann told Computer Weekly. In March, more than 50 applications available via the official Android Market were found to contain malware, according to mobile security site Android Police. The fact that Android is open source and its adoption is accelerating is making it an increasingly popular malware target, says Siegelman. Being open source could mean Android is easier to exploit than other operating systems because cyber criminals have access to the source code, and as user numbers increase, so does the cyber criminals' business case, he says.

The backup feature also protects contacts, call logs, bookmarks, messages and installed applications to an SD card. The 'app locker' can password protect any app on a tablet to prevent children using certain applications or data.

Android Increasingly Under Attack: AVG Q1 Security Threat Report
May 12, 2011

The company also noted a notable increase in risk for smartphone users, and the Android platform in particular. AVG says the open source nature of the OS as well as the “open-garden approach” in allowing users to install software on their phones opens the door for hackers to write malicious code. The fragmentation of the Android platform also doesn’t help, AVG adds. During Q1 2011, AVG marked 0.20% of downloaded Android apps as malicious.

The Daily App: AVG Antivirus for Android
May 04, 2011

We installed AVG Antivirus for Android on a Droid X, and got going in a snap. AVG will scan for malware and vulnerabilities just like a PC-based antivirus application. We liked AVG, too, for the details it provided after every scan. For example, after an initial scan, the app told us we had 176 installed apps, 1,375 activity screens, 112 content providers, 243 receivers and 233 services. This a free Android app, but -- and we seldom say this about software we evaluate -- it served up advertising in the app itself. That struck us as odd and un-enterprise-like. AVG is a solid, quick fix for security needs for devices on the Android platform.

Security to Ward Off Crime on Phones
February 23, 2011

More consumers are buying smartphones. So more criminals are taking aim at those devices. Criminals still prefer PCs for stealing personal data, bank and credit card account numbers as well as for running frauds. However, most PC attacks focus on Microsoft's decade-old Windows XP operating system, which is slowly being replaced by the more secure Windows 7. Over the next few years, hackers will have to find new targets. With smartphones outselling PCs for the first time — 421 million of the hand-held computers are expected to be sold worldwide this year, according to market analysts at IDC — the long-predicted crime wave on hand-held devices appears to have arrived.
